Day 70
Deuteronomy — I understand, means second law or repeated law. It means one would see a repetition of the laws here. I wondered why laws were being repeated. My conclusion is that a new generation of Israelites who would take over the promised land had been birthed, and only Moses, Joshua and Caleb were left as at today’s reading. Recall there was a census in the last chapters of Leviticus. So the younger generations had to be reminded of their history, both good and bad, their journey, the laws, etc.
Moses recounts how they got to where they are today. I noticed how in his recap, he had talked about some suggestions given by the Israelites as a good idea, which he decided to follow through with. This tells me God also lets us use our ideas and decisions as we chart through our journey in life. In reading, I also saw some details I had initially missed out on, and the repetition today helped recall my understanding of the Israelites’ story.
A review of the Israelites past is to remind them of how good God has been to them in coming this far , and not to repeat the mistakes of their forefathers. It also helps them connect the dots. Like I had mentioned in one of my past musings, reviewing the past is for information gathering to prepare us the future.
