Day 121
So, exactly what was recorded in 1 Samuel 5:1–10 was also recorded in 1 Chronicles 11:1–9. That’s interesting, as there were different authors of these books.
The remaining part of today’s reading goes on to mention David’s mighty men. Interestingly, Joab was not listed as one of David’s mighty men despite being the commander-in-chief. Could this have been because he killed Abner (Day 111)? Joab’s brothers, Abishai and (late) Asahel, and even Joab’s armourbearer made the list.
I spent some time pondering why David would pour out the water gotten by the three men for him in 11:15–19. Why ask for it knowing they would risk their lives and later not drink it for the same reason? Read this article, and here is an excerpt:
King David knew all of this and realised that he had foolishly expressed a desire that put the lives of those three mighty men at unnecessary risk. There was water in the camp, but he developed a longing for water drawn from the well at Bethlehem. Those three men risked their lives to fight through to the well, to draw that water and return. David realised he needed to repent for his weakness and foolishness.
The reading ended with David and his men making merry. And I said it does take a village. The people who believed and trusted David were used by God to help him achieve greatness. It made me reflect on those God has but in my corner and how God uses us all.
